Hutchinson has written a book for all parents, teachers, physicians and counselors as well as any adult diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (“ADD”) to read. I was introduced to the work of Tobias Wolff by the movie adaptation of his memoir This Boy's Life, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert Deniro. Last fall I read This Boy's Life by Tobias Wolff as part of a memoir class taught by the lovely and talented Peggy Millin. I Hear: Tobias Wolff's memoir This Boy's Life opens with a striking image: a childhood memory of seeing a tractor trailer lose control of its breaks and plummet over the side of a cliff. It's overly obvious, I suppose, to say that memoir is based on memory—on the emotional life of the narrator. The Lord's Prayer provides the title of this leisurely memoir/ethnography of a boy's life in a small, provincial town is northeastern Italy in the 1920s. I have many favorite memoirs, and usually the one I like best is the one I'm currently reading, but I do have some I revisit often, ones that bring a smile to my face just seeing their covers, old friends I never get tired of passing time with. Many of the memoirs that line my bookshelves I've not yet read, and that's okay, even though my Tobias Wolff, This Boy's Life: A Memoir. In This Boy's Life he often uses a group of characters to reveal the “I” to the reader. So I'm dressing up this post with some snips from This Boy's Life, Wolff's memoir of his transient, messy boyhood, anchored by his time in rural Washington state.
